Gerald L. Greer, 81, resident of Lantern Park Care Center, Coralville, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the care center of Parkinson’s Disease.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:30 am Saturday, June 5, 2004 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fathers James Vrba and Walter Helms officiating. The family will greet friends Friday from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with a vigil service at 7:00pm. Friends may also call one hour before the funeral mass at the Church. Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A reception at the church hall will follow the committal services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Iowa City; St. Peter’s Church in Eagle River, Wisconsin; the Gerald Greer Scholarship Fund at Oak Park; River Forest High School, 201 North Scovill Ave., Oak Park, IL 6002; or to Iowa City Hospice. Following the burial a reception will be held at the Church Hall.

Gerald was born February 2, 1923 in Iowa City, the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Cronin) Greer. He attended St. Patrick’s High School and received his BA and Master’s degrees in History from The University of Iowa. He served in the Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart.

Gerald devoted his life to teaching at Conroy, Iowa; Taylorville, Illinois; and Oak Park and River Forest High School in Oak Park, Illinois where he became Chairman of the History Department. He retired to Eagle River, Wisconsin in 1978. He returned to Iowa City in 2001 where he resided at Silvercrest.
Gerald is survived by his sister, Janet E. McMichael (Jim) of West Des Moines and five nieces and nephews: John, Margaret, Patti, Mary and Tom.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Monsignor Edward Greer.
