Gladys Spayde, 85, formerly of 201 N. 1st Avenue in Iowa City, died Monday May 3, 2004 at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Gladys’ life will be held Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 1:30 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. Private burial of cremated remains will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be directed to the Education Foundation of the Fairfield Public Schools. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys was born September 27, 1918 in Fargo, North Dakota, the daughter of John and Ida Siljenberg Carlson. She married Sydney Spayde September 8, 1950 in Hisega, South Dakota.

She received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech from The University of South Dakota in 1939. Gladys was a stage actress, appearing in many plays in summer stock and community theatre. In 1945 and 1946 she toured American military installations in Europe and North Africa with USO Camp Shows. Later she appeared with the acting companies of the Black Hills Playhouse, Penn Players in Pennsylvania, and community theatres in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan and Canton, Ohio.
She spent over 20 years in Fairfield, Iowa as a speech educator for the Fairfield schools, retiring in 1983. Gladys moved to Iowa City in 1984 and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Gladys greatly enjoyed her memberships in the P.E.O. Chapter J.F., the Music Study Club, Entre Nous, and was an alumna of Alpha Xi Delta.

Gladys is survived by her son, Jon Spayde and his wife, Laurie Phillips, of St. Paul, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother.
