Irene E. Lockhart, age 83, of Solon and formerly of Iowa City died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at the Solon Care Center following an extended illness. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2004 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial of cremains will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Hospice of Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent to her family at www.gayandciha.com.
Irene Evelyn Aitchison was born on September 5, 1920 in Cascade, Iowa the daughter of Earl B. and Sarah Cheney Aitchison. She attended Clinton, Iowa schools and graduated from Clinton High School. Irene received her degree as a Registered Nurse from Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton. On April 8, 1941 Irene married George Lockhart in Wapello, Iowa. They lived in Iowa City from 1949 until the mid seventies when they moved to Mesa, Arizona. While in Iowa City she worked as a R.N. at Mercy Hospital. In 1994 they moved back to Iowa living at Windmill Point and the Hawthorne Inn in Coralville. Irene enjoyed genealogy; she spent many hours researching her family history. While in Arizona she taught seminars on how to do Genealogy Research. She was a member of the Genealogy Workshop of Mesa, Iowa City Genealogy Society, Mayflower Society, Dubuque County Key City Genealogy Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion Auxiliary. Irene enjoyed art and studied with Professor Wilke who taught at the University of Iowa.
Her family includes her children, Carol Lewis and husband, Harry of North Liberty, Earl Lockhart and wife, Judy of Cedar Rapids, Rich Lockhart and wife, Liz of Iowa City, Mark Lockhart and wife, Lisa of Biloxi, Mississippi, fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two sisters in-law, Jane Lockhart of Clinton, Iowa and Lois Lockhart of Batavia, Illinois along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. The Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Irene’s services and her family.
