Ethel Sladek, 98, formerly of Iowa City and a longtime resident of Atrium Village, Hills, died Monday March 22, 2004 at Atrium Village following an extended illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 11:00am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City with Rev. Rudolph Berndt officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, March 24, 2004 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City where a with a rosary will be recited at 6:30pm. A luncheon will follow the committal service. Memorial Contributions may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills.

Mrs. Sladek was born October 12, 1905 in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of John and Jessie Cabaret Hall. She was a graduate of Mt. Ayr High School and in 1943 received her diploma in nursing from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. In 1946 Ethel graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in psychology. On October 3, 1946 she married Frank Sladek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon, Iowa. He died in 1986.

Ethel was employed at Mercy Iowa City from 1952-1965, where she had been a nursing instructor and for twelve years served at the Assistant Director of Nursing.

She was a longtime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, the National League of Nursing, the American Nursing Association and the Mercy Hospital Alumni Association. Ethel was active in Red Cross nursing and was recognized by the United States Public Health Services for her meritorious service for her wartime contribution as an instructor with the US Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She had also been a delegate to the Iowa State Association of Registered Nurses.
Ethel and Frank moved to Atrium Village in Hills in 1983.

Ethel always cared and served others in their spiritual and physical needs. She enjoyed reading to friends and writing poetry. Over the years she spent many hours crocheting and had crocheted many baby hats that she gave to local hospitals for newborn infants. Ethel was a wonderful cook and loved to make kolaches for family and friends. She had a special gift at gardening and raising African Violets. Ethel loved to correspond with family and friends.

Ethel is survived by her loving nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and four sisters, Esther Craycraft, Frances Sobotka, Rhoda Sobotka and Ruth Rychnovsky.
