News: Flu Claims Five Victims... (1918)

Iowa City Citizen, Iowa City (Johnson Co.), Iowa 18 October 1918.

"FLU" CLAIMS FIVE VICTIMS HERE TODAY
Four S.A.T.C. Men and Dr. Mueller of Iowa City

Three deaths is the toll of the influenza scourge here in the past twenty-four hour period.

The Death Toll.
For Iowa City, the S.A.T.C. and the immediate community the record is as follows: Previously reported 36, today's dead 5, total 41.

Dr. Mueller Dies.
On the brink of the abyss for a number of days, with skilled brother physicians exerting every possible effort to save his life, Dr. J.G. Mueller died last night.

Four men of the Student Army Training Corps also died.

Cloyde Adams, 220 South Linn, Iowa City, member of S.A.T.C. died late today.

Mark Cyczski, member of company S. from Wisconsin, member of S.A.T.C. died late today.

Felix Pauls, giving his address as Iowa City died late last evening. He is 21 years of age and leaves a wife. Their residence was East Washington. Deceased is from Washington, Iowa, and his father is a real estate operator in that city.

E. Hoeven, a sophomore dental student died at 6:45 this morning. His home was in Alton, Iowa.

Situation Still Improves
Authorities stated today that the situation is still on the mend. There were no new cases of pneumonia today and only a few new influenza cases in the university. There are a number of serious cases now being carefully watched and more deaths are expected.

Stanley Thomas reported dangerous yesterday is improving today.

In the City.
In the city either there are fewer cases or they are getting along without a doctor. Mayor Stebbins only received report of 18 cases all told yesterday. There are 11 cases at the emergency city hospital. Reports from there are encouraging.
