Charles JOHNSON, Retired Tailor, Taken In Death

Death came late Saturday afternoon to Charles J. JOHNSON, 91, who operated a tailor shop in Fairfield for 45 years before his retirement.

He passed away about 3:20 p.m. at the Crawford Nursing home where he had been a patient since he became seriously ill 10 days ago. Prior to that he had been in his usual health. The family home is at 404 E. Adams street.

Last rites will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home with Dr. E. A. Piper in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Charles J. JOHNSON came to the United States from his native Sweden when he was 12 years of age. He arrived in Fairfield in 1892 and opened a tailor shop which he continued to operate for almost a half century. He retired in 1944.

Charles J. JOHNSON was born Feb. 9, 1866, in Sweden. He was the son of the late John and Christine CARLSON JOHNSON. He was united in marriage on Dec. 24, 1888, to Christina DAHLGREN. The wedding took place at Fort Dodge. His wife passed away Oct. 12, 1951.

A member of the Lutheran church, he is survived by two sons, Fred C. and Albert C. JOHNSON, both of Fairfield. He is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Charles SILFORD, Modesto, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one son, one brother and three sisters.
