Jerold “Jerry” William Poots, 91, of Newton died on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Newton Village. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service on Friday. Memorials to the United Presbyterian Church, the Jasper County Historical Museum, or Newton FFA may be left at the funeral home.

Jerry, the son of Raymond and Mabel (Reckler) Poots, was born on November 6, 1934, in Grinnell. He grew up in rural Jasper County and attended the Oakridge Country School until 8th grade, before graduating from Newton High School in 1953. Growing up he was also an active member of 4-H. Jerry then served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. On September 23, 1961, Jerry was united in marriage with Cynthia Vander Schel in Newton. Together they ran their family farm northwest of Newton. Jerry was a hard worker and dedicated to his land and his animals. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Grange, Ridge Road Ramblers 4-H Leader, United Presbyterian Church, and the Farm Bureau.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Cynthia Poots; children, Mitzi (Scott), Todd (Marta), and Christin (Glen); four grandsons, Preston, Matthew, Clayton, and Zachary; three granddaughters, Haley, Mandy, and Torey; two great-grandsons, Trice and Michael; three great-granddaughters, Sage, Ember, and Tobin; and his brother, John Poots. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Laura Schnell, Alice Haaland, and Irma Sarata.
