Michael J. Holmes, age 54 of Prairie City, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026 at Comfort House in Pella. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will take place at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. A rosary will be prayed on Monday, April 6, 2026 beginning at 4:30 pm at the church with visitation following from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Memorials may be directed to the family to be used at a later time and checks made payable to Michele Holmes. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

The son of Michael G. and Mary (Myers) Holmes, Michael was born on June 29, 1971 in Des Moines, Iowa. Michael graduated from Prairie City High School in 1989 and from there he continued to work on the family farm. On September 4, 1999, he was united in marriage to Michele Hotovec at Immaculate Conception Church in Colfax. Michael and Michele made their home in Prairie City on their farm in 2003, where they raised their boys, Matthew and Mitchell. Michael dedicated his life to the farm raising Black Angus Cattle until 2021 and continued as a row crop farmer until his death. Michael was meticulous about keeping the farm pristine and always took pride in taking care of his farm equipment. Michael lived for the outdoors. You would always see him driving his side-by-side throughout the countryside. He enjoyed riding bikes with his two boys. Going kayaking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. His family made yearly trips to Pulpit Rock Campground in Decorah, IA and to Lake Okoboji, IA.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Michele and sons, Matthew and Mitchell. Also surviving, his parents Mike and Mary Holmes; sisters Mindy (Jeff) Shaver and Marcie (Derik) Strait; father-in-law Mick (Shirley) Hotovec; sister-in-law Angie (Jim) Epp and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Michael in death were his grandparents, Lewis and Blanche Myers and John and Alerta Holmes and a cousin, David Holmes.
