Darrell Maynard Lindsay
August 9, 1948 - March 12, 2026

Darrell Maynard Lindsay, age 77, of Colfax, Iowa, passed away on March 12, 2026. A celebration of Darrell’s life will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.

The son of Maynard and Vera (Grisso) Lindsay, Darrell was born on August 9, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the 3rd baseman for the Cedar Rapids Washington Baseball team. From what I hear, he was a legend in that corner. He went on to play for the Upper Iowa Peacocks where he met Dan Rourke. Dan had a beautiful sister, Debbie, whom Dar fell in love with. Dar and Deb married and had two amazing children, Jeff and Jeni. Dar continued to play ball on the weekends for the Williamsburg Red Sox. Many friends and memories were made on that journey. Dar settled with his family in Colfax. There he would spend his 33 years in education as the PE teacher, sometimes known as Gym by the kids, the name on the outside of the door. He always had a story that happened with those rascals. There was not a dull time in his PE class.

He coached the high school softball team for many years and led Colfax to their first state appearance in 1983. Many talented players played for him during his reign, and he was ever so proud of them as he continued to talk about them to his granddaughter Tori. He continued coaching until Jeni graduated. Imagine his surprise when Jeff brought home the shortstop from a rival team-oh the bantering back and forth for the first couple of months helped me understand why his players loved him so much.

Back then, he was able to coach softball and still be able to watch Jeff play baseball as they were on different nights. His pride and joy was watching his kids grow up beside him while he was AD and coaching.

He also coached a variety of other sports at Colfax and Colfax-Mingo. He was also the Athletic Director for many years. A meticulous AD. As a lefty, you could always spot his notes that were written with that small slant and perfect letters. The coaches he had on staff at Colfax and CM became lifelong friends, as it should be. All staff at Colfax and Colfax-Mingo were like family.

If the Cubs were playing, you could catch him on his deck cracking peanuts, enjoying a cold one and yelling at the radio. “Cubs win Cubs win” would echo in the neighborhood. Everyone always enjoyed the conversations on the deck at Grandpa and Grandmas. If the Hawkeyes were on, you could catch him on the edge of his recliner yelling at the TV. His relaxing Saturday nights would be spent with the love of his life, dancing in the kitchen. It was the alone time they cherished.

His grandchildren were the sparkle in his eyes. Whiffle ball was always being played in the backyard with a bat that had been taped together several times. In his younger years, he would not miss a game of theirs. Sitting in his lawn chair, eating popcorn with a smile and visiting with everyone that crossed his path. After the game, the coach in him came out and the plays were discussed all over again.

We know that he cherished all the memories and friends along his life’s journey. We will all miss his quick wit and words of wisdom.

Darrell is survived by his children, Jeff (Christy) Lindsay and Jeni Pearson; his grandchildren, Trey (Emily Fudge) Lindsay, Cade (Hannah Hageman) Lindsay, Tori Lindsay, Kaleigh (Nathan) McKenney, and Tiernan Pearson; great grandchildren, Wren Lindsay and Stetson Lindsay; as well as two close cousins, Lisa Dobson and Linda Minder.

Preceding Darrell in death was his wife of 55 years, Deborah Lindsay; his parents, Maynard and Vera Lindsay; and a son-in-law, Mike Pearson.
