Kellogg – Funeral services for Martha Ellen Sloan, who died at her home here Monday evening, Dec. 7, were held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. with Rev. R. t. White, pastor of the local Methodist Episcopal church in charge of the rites.
Music was furnished by Mrs. J. L. Williams and Mrs. R. S. Dunn who sang “Going Down The Valley” and “Rock of Ages” with accompaniment by Inez Powers.
Harry Reichelt, R. Adkins, Milo Lemke, Jay Loupee, Tom Breen and Walter Keeton served as pallbearers. Burial was made in the Antle cemetery west of town.
Martha Ellen Williams was born in Brownsville, Ky., Nov 18, 1853. Her early life was spent in the south. She was united in marriage to Cyrus Allen Sloan, Sept. 23, 1882. Twelve children were born of this union, four of whom survive. Her husband preceded her in death on March 24, 1928.
The family came to Kellogg February 14, 1911 and for ten years she operated a boarding house here.
She united with the Primitive Baptist church while a resident of Kentucky and retained her membership there throughout her life.
Beside her own children she mothered two grandchildren from their infancy.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Mrs. Amanda Stewart and Mrs. Minnie Smith of Waterloo, Mrs. Claude Keeton of Grinnell and Miss Flora at home; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
