Obituary – Mrs. Jos. Miller
A Pioneer Mother Who had Lived in Jasper County for 62 Years
Elizabeth Wood-Miller, daughter of Thomas and Martha Wood was born in Licking county, Ohio, December 21, 1840, and died at her home southwest of Kellogg, at 6:15, Friday morning, April 28, 1916, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 7 days.
When 12 years of age she moved with her parents to Henry county, Iowa, and two years later came to Jasper county, where she lived continuously until claimed by death.
On September 28, 1856, she was united in marriage with Joseph Miller, who survives her. To this union eleven children were born – six sons and five daughters – all of whom are living. They are: William of Central City, Neb.; T. Jefferson of Afton, Iowa; Edwin of Kellogg; Mrs. S. A. Owings of Newton; Charles and Mrs. C. R. Mobberly of Kellogg; Mrs. H. D. Wing of North Yakima, Washington; Mrs. Carrie Saum of Des Moines; Mrs. George D. Harrah of Omaha, Nebraska; John ad Fred of newton. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Wing.
A little over a year ago, Mother Miller fell and broke her left hip, and since that time has been a great sufferer. Some three weeks ago she was taken with pneumonia. All the care and love that skilled physicians and an anxious household could devise and apply for her comfort and assistance were brought into play, but the __at of Him who rules in-comings and outgoings had been issued, and after weeks of struggle, despite the prayers and entreaties of all who knew and loved her, their appeals were overruled. The great destroyer had placed his signet on her brow, and today hundreds who loved her living mourn her death.
She was converted and united with the M. E. church some 25 years ago, and during the intervening years she had lived a faithful and consistent Christian life.
She was a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor, ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need of assistance, and after a long and busy life she died as she had lived – honored, trusted and loved.
The funeral services were held at Pleasant View church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Fowler, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Antle cemetery west of Kellogg.
