Rites Held For Marvin Leonard
Marvin Lee Leonard, 43, a resident of Newton, died Wednesday evening May 11, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Mr. Leonard, a lifelong resident of Jasper County suffered a stroke Monday morning May 9, while at work on his farm.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Newton. The Rev. Robert Snyder of the First United Church of Christ and the Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church conducted the services. Burial was in the Zoar Cemetery.
Survivors are his wife, Janet, a son Tim at home; two daughters, Chris and Michele, both at home; a brother Tom Leonard of Bentonville, Ark, and a step-sister, Mrs. Dave (Susan) McConeghey of Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Mr. Leonard was a member of the First United Church of Christ, member and past president of the Jasper County Farm Bureau, president of the Zoar Cemetery Association, member of the Cardinal Booster Club board, Newton school board member, a member of the Jasper County Fair board, the Izaak Walton League and had been director of the State Babe Ruth tournament held in Newton.
The son of James and Lela Emmack Leonard, he was born July 31, 1939 in Newton, attended Mingo Schools and was graduated from Mingo Community High School.
He was married to Janet Klein, June 18, 1961 at Zoar Church.
