Lawrence E. Gardner, 84, of Cambridge died of cancer Sunday at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge, of which he was a member. Cremation will follow services. Private inurnment of the cremains will be at a later date at Cambridge Cemetery.
Mr. Gardner was born in Clear Lake and had lived in the Mingo area as a youth. He had owned a garage and Case Implement dealership and had worked at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Masonic Tabernacle Lodge 452 and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 233 and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cambridge. He had served as mayor of Cambridge, chief of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Department and as president of the Cambridge school board. He enjoyed woodworking and flying radio-controlled airplanes.
He is survived by three sons, Richard of Urbandale, Ronald of Gardiner, Mont., and Brian of Leewood, Kan.; a daughter, Sandra Raney of Hampton; a brother, Leland of Cambridge; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Hill Gardner.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
