Donald Ewart Freeman
December 3, 1929 ~ August 3, 2024 (age 94)

Donald Ewart Freeman was born December 3rd,1929, to parents Fredrick and Dorothy Freeman. He and his two siblings, Grace and Ken, grew up in Rochester, New York.

When he was 18 years old (1947), he enlisted in the Air Force. He would be stationed in Moses Lake, Washington, in 1954, where on a blind date he met a young woman named Marjorie Alice Morgan. They fell in love and eloped on April 18th,1955. He enrolled at the University of Washington and graduated with his bachelor of science in electrical engineering. In 1960 they moved to Southern California, and Don worked at TRW, an aerospace and electronics company, often on national defense projects.

Their first son, Don, was born in 1962, and then another son, Robert, in 1964. Elaine, their first daughter, was born in 1966 and lastly, another daughter, Kathryn, in 1969.

During those years in Artesia, California, Don volunteered at their church as an elder, coffee- time host, and grounds keeper; was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, organizing and leading numerous long-term camping and backpacking trips; was a driver to all baseball and Campfire Girls events; and at home, a general handyman, gardener, and all-around “tinkerer.” On summer Fridays, Don would often head to the beach after work to meet up with Marjorie and the kids for a campfire and weenie-roast supper.

He took an early retirement from TRW and assisted Marjorie at her job, and eventually helped to design their dream house in Washington state. He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, and to the Midwest. On his 89th birthday in 2018, he moved to Newton, Iowa, to live with his oldest son and family, and to spend time with his two great-grandchildren, Meredith and Owen.

On Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, Don left us to be with the Lord. He was a loving and dedicated husband and father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his four children: Don Freeman, Robert Freeman, Elaine (Freeman) Moorehouse, and Kathryn (Freeman) Inouye; and his sister Grace Fraatz and brother Ken Freeman, who still lives in upstate New York. He has 11 grandchildren: Carolyn (Freeman) Hinshaw, Michael Freeman, David Freeman, and Andrea (Freeman) Erickson; Nicolis Freeman, Lauren (Freeman) Perez, and Evan Freeman; Emma Barrios and Edward Barrios; Jared Inouye and Lyndsey Inouye; and three great-grandchildren, Meredith Pearl Hinshaw, Owen Tenny Hinshaw, and Leah Faith Freeman.

He will be missed and forever loved.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, October 11, 2024, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, followed by a luncheon.
