December 28, 1927 ~ March 30, 2021 (age 93)

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 5, 2021, at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Memorials in Ray’s name (please make checks payable to Sharon Clark) can be brought to the service or left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Ray, the son of Ray J. and Rosetta (Samuels) Dickerson, was born December 28, 1927, in Palo Alto Township in Jasper County, Iowa. He served his country in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII from 1946-1948 and again during the Korean War from 1950-1951. Ray was united in marriage with Doris Lee McGrath on November 14, 1960. He had worked as a carpenter for Central Iowa Carpenters’ Union Local 106 for many years. Carpentry was not only his profession but also a hobby, as he enjoyed building things in his spare time. Ray also enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, and trips to the casino. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Ray is survived by his wife, Doris of Newton; stepdaughters, Karla (Jerry) Clement, Sharon Clark, and Debi (Rob) Snook, all of Newton; his grandchildren: Steve Ayers, Julie McWhirter, Lisa Hansen, Mark Ayers, Dave Purvis, Kim Mueller, Leasha Trease, Emily Barrett, and Ryan Provin; 17 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Glen Dickerson; sisters, Madelyn, Toots, and Janice; his son-in-law, Jim Ayers; great-grandson, Tyler Purvis; and many nieces and nephews.
