Donald “Don” R. Patterson, 83, of Newton died on Tuesday, February 09, 2021, at University Park Nursing and Rehab in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials to the U.S. Veteran’s Alliance may be left at the funeral home.

Don, the son of Russell and Rosa (Schultz) Patterson, was born on February 26, 1937 in rural Jasper County. He grew up in Newton. Don served his country in the U.S. Army for 20 years, from 1956-1976, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He then returned to Newton and worked for 25 years at Iowa Southern Utilities. On November 24, 2009, Don was united in marriage with Kathy (Fox) Hasstedt in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were avid travelers and enjoyed being park hosts for the Core of Engineers at Red Rock in Pella, for BLM (Bureau of Land Management) in Arizona, and also in Colorado. Don was also a member of the American Legion Post 111.

Don is survived by his wife, Kathy Patterson of Newton; children, Franz (Jennifer) Patterson of Newton, Silvia Patterson of Newton, Shirley (Jerry) Johnson of Runnells, and Kathy Hopman of Newton; his grandchildren, Christopher (Elizabeth) Johnson, Emily Hopman, and Sara (Jason) Ohlfest; great-grandchildren, Julia, Cameron, Preston, Elliott, and Everett; his step-children, Michael Hasstedt of Las Vegas, Nevada, Randy Hasstedt of Georgetown, Texas, and Julie (Brian) Meenan of Henderson, Nevada; step-grandchildren, Logan and Ellie Meenan; his sister, Jane Grimm of Newton; many nieces and nephews; his long-time friend, Jim Jones; and his fur baby, Tootsie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and six siblings, Kenneth, Julia, Ralph, Lois, Doris, and Raymond.
