Oskaloosa – Bette J. Wright, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Nov. 3, 2013 at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Bette was a resident of Maple Ridge Assisted Living in Oskaloosa.
Bette was born at her grandparent’s farm home on July 22, 1922, near Collins, the daughter of Frank and Grace Hattery Landers. Her mother died suddenly in 1924 when Bette was 2 years old, and she returned to Collins to live with her maternal grandparents. When she was older, she made her home with an aunt and uncle in Woodward until she graduated from high school. After high school, she attended Capitol City Commercial College and worked a session of the Iowa Legislature in the Senate Chamber.
In 1942, Bette married Leslie R. Wright Jr. They raised their family on the family farm near Perry and later in Fort Madison, Creston, Colby, Kan., and Des Moines before moving to Oskaloosa in 1958. They were the parents of four children, Barbara (F. Lynn) Hinkle of Bozeman, Mont., Connie Eberline, Leland (Connie Wymore) Wright and Christine Wright, all of Oskaloosa.
Bette was employed for more than 26 years at Iowa Trust & Savings Bank in Oskaloosa, retiring as vice president and assistant trust officer.
She later worked eight years for the state of Iowa as a court attendant for Mahaska County. Her main interest outside of her family and friends included cooking, sewing and playing cards, especially bridge.
Bette was a member of Central United Methodist Church, past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of Altrusa Club and a past member of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Bette is survived by her four children; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one sister, Wilma (Jerry) Fisher of Phoenix, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa; Rev. Tom Boomershine officiating. A private burial service of the cremated remains will be held at a later date at Greencastle Cemetery near Collins, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House or to Central United Methodist Church.
