Jay C. Morton Ex-Resident, Dies
Funeral services for Jay Cope Morton, 74, of Nevada, brother of Mrs. Harold Lufkin of Newton, and a former Newton resident, were held Monday at Cleveland’s Funeral Home in Waverly.
Also surviving are his wife, Ethel; a son, Richard A. of Ames; another sister, Mrs. Claude Efnor of Minneapolis, Minn.; and six grandchildren.
Mr. Morton, who spent his youth in Newton, was a graduate of Dayton High School and attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in forestry.
A member of the 88th Division in France during World War I, he spent 16 months in the Arctic on the Baffin Islands on airfield construction projects in 1942-43, and was chief warrant officer in the 16th special Seabee Battalion in the Pacific during World War II.
He was past commander of the American Legion Post in Waverly, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine.
