Harry E. Jones , 76, of Newton died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
As per Harry’s wishes, his body has been cremated, and memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at the St. Luke United Methodist Church, 501 E. 19th St. N. in Newton, Iowa, with Pastor Audrey Young officiating. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Luke United Methodist Church or to the Mid-Iowa Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Memorials may be left at the church on the afternoon of the service or at the funeral home.
The son of Charles E. and Alice (Hesson) Jones, Harry was born Dec. 20, 1933, in Baxter, Iowa. Harry graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1953, and he served his country in the U. S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He was united in marriage to M. Kathryn Bleakney on Oct. 6, 1956, in Newton.
Harry was a retired union electrician, working as a construction electrician. He was a member of the St. Luke Methodist Church and had been the Boy Scout Leader of Troop 358 for many years. Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and woodworking but his children and eight grandchildren were the delight of his life. Harry was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Harry is survived by his wife, Katie of Newton; two sons, Charles “Chuck” (Laura) Jones of New Virginia, Iowa, and Robert (Christy) Jones of Port Orchard, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Dittmer of Urbandale; eight grandchildren, Alex, Andrew, Christopher and Charles Clayton, Veronica and Victoria Jones and Alisha and Olivia Dittmer; a brother, Don (Ruth) Jones of Newton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jerald and Eugene Jones; and a sister, Wanda Jones.
