Donald Ray Fulkerson, 85, of Newton died Friday morning, Dec. 3, 2010, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, with a memorial service at 6 p.m. at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home. A visitation also will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date in the Edinburg IOOF Cemetery in Edinburg, Mo. Memorials have been designated for Hospice of Jasper County and Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund.
The son of Clarence Samuel and Bessie H. (Hoskins) Fulkerson, Donald was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Trenton, Grundy County, Mo. Donald graduated from the Trenton High School with the Class of 1943. On Sept. 18, 1949, in Ridgeway, Mo., Donald was united in marriage to Mary Louise Sullivan, from Bloomfield, Iowa.
Donald served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had worked as a farmer, an assistant at Johnson Funeral Home in Newton, a construction worker for 16 years and retired from Maytag Company in 1989 with 18-plus years of service.
Donald was a member of the Jamesport United Methodist Church. He loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, gun making, growing roses and spending time with family (most of all, his three special grandsons) and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Lowell Bond Fulkerson and sister Celia Fulkerson Spillman.
Those left to honor the memory of Donald include his wife, Mary Louise Fulkerson of Newton; son, Douglas Ray Fulkerson of Newton; daughter and son-in-law, Marta Louise and Todd Poots of Huxley; three grandsons, Preston Bond Poots, Matthew Todd Poots and Clayton John Poots; sister, Lucille Smith of Brimson, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Cricket.
