Lloyd Charles Chambers, 74, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle against colon cancer, in Benson, Ariz., on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010.
Cherishing his memory are his wife, Jeannine of Benson, Ariz; his daughters, Cheri Brown (Michael) of Garner, Iowa, and Jacqueline Pherigo (Gary) and Christine Churchill (Jim Warwick), both of Newton, Iowa. He also will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Lynn and Jill Chambers of St. Charles, Iowa, and Lee and Cindy Chambers of Robins, Iowa, Carol and Don Gray of Nokomis, Fla., and Eleanor and Jim Deyo of Wooster, Ohio. Lloyd leaves behind a loving legacy of seven grandchildren, Christopher Dodds (Terra) of Lonsdale, Minn., Michelle Pherigo of Newton, Iowa, Lindsey Sprouse (Tyler), of Norwalk, Iowa, Nicole McNair (Tucker) of Savage, Minn., Nicholas, Michael and Emily Brown, all of Garner, Iowa, and four great-grandchildren, Allegra Dodds, Amaya Cox, Maize and Makayla Sprouse and Landen McNair.
Lloyd, beloved son of Royce Gaius Chambers and Joyce Ellen (Dugan) Chambers, was born in Charles City, Iowa, on Sept. 15, 1936. Lloyd graduated from Charles City High School in 1954. Lloyd and Jeannine Lorraine Mathyer were married on Nov. 30, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Lloyd served his country as a staff sergeant in the United States Air Force for eight years as both a radar technician at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Neb., and a radar maintenance instructor at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. Lloyd joined the Maytag Company in 1964. He worked in heat treat and rubber and quality control. He retired as a general supervisor quality improvement with 30 years of service. Lloyd was a long time resident of Newton, Iowa. Lloyd was a member of the United Church of Christ in Newton, Iowa. A beloved family member preceding Lloyd in death was his sister, Shirley (Chambers) Opperud.
Lloyd enjoyed being a member of Chapter 21, Escapees RV Club and the Saguaro SKP Co-op in Benson, Ariz., where he lived for 11 years. He loved traveling, and he took trips to Alaska, Canada, Mexico and all parts of the United States. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting with his father and brothers. Hobbies that Lloyd enjoyed were reading, genealogy and being a member of the computer club at the co-op.
Military committal services with honors will be at the Southern Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Ariz., at a later date. A celebration of life memorial service will be in Iowa on Father’s Day, June 19, 2011.
Lloyd was a loving husband, father, and friend who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Memorial contributions, in his memory, can be sent to organizations who research the prevention and cure of cancer.
