Dennis Tripp, 71, of Newton died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton with Pastor Tiare Mathison officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. A private family burial will be at Union Cemetery in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First Presbyterian Church may be left at the church during visitation or the service. Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is handling arrangements.
The son of David R. and Helen (Chevalier) Tripp, Dennis was born Dec. 23, 1938, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1957. He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Weter on Oct. 12, 1957, in Newton.
Dennis was a fireman in Newton for 23 years, retiring in 1985. At the First Presbyterian Church, he served on the B&G Committee, was an elder for three years and served on the work week committee for 13 years. During that time he also went on 11 work week trips.
Dennis enjoyed wood -working, camping, kayaking, traveling and working around his home. He also liked going to antique shows, flea markets and auctions. Dennis was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Tripp of Newton; three daughters, Sandra (Tom) Cheney of Newton, Sheryl (David) Schnoebelen of Boise, Idaho, and Suzanne (David) Funk of Newton; four grandchildren, Jason, Nicholas and Jacob Schnoebelen and Sara Moore; three great-grandchildren, Reannon, Issac and Evany; and his brother, Tom (Joyce) Tripp of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Alan Tripp.
