OBITUARY – Enoch Hinlay Cowling was born in Clinton County, Pennsylvania, November 28th, 1813, and died November 4th, 1878, aged 34 years, 11 months and 7 days. Deceased moved to Jasper County, Iowa, in the Spring of 1868, and was married to Miss Lena Cavender June 30th, 1872. He embraced religion about three years ago, under the labors of Rev. J. M. Coats, and joined the M. E. Church at Grace Chapel, since which time he has lived a consistent Christian life and died in the full triumph of the Christian faith, his last words being:
“Alas! and did my Savior bleed; and did my Sovereign die.”
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. P. Michener, and the remains were deposited in the cemetery at the U. P. Church, 4 miles south of Newton. The sermon was preached from numbers xxiii 10, latter part – “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his.” The deceased leaves a wife and three children, besides many relatives and friends, to mourn his loss; but we are assured that our loss is his gain. May God bless, comfort and keep the widow and the fatherless.
