Calvin Breeden, known to this people of this community as Captain Breeden, died suddenly while in the act of pumping a bucket of water in the yard back of his house, three miles west of Fulton on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Deceased was born in Edgar Co., Ill., May 29, 1830, and came to Iowa with his parents in 1838. He was married to Miss Adelia Martin Sept. 22, 1853. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Breeden, three of the number survive the parents, two sons, F. M. and Otto N. and a daughter Rosa M. Mrs. Breeden died in 1896. Calvin Breeden enlisted Aug. 8, 1862, as a sergeant in Co. B, 26th Ia. Vol. Inf., and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, March 11, 1863. He was mustered out Aug. 1, 1864. He participated in many severe engagements during his time of service. The funeral services were conducted at the church near his home last Thursday and were largely attended. Rev. Henry Clark officiated and Fred DeGrush spoke some appropriate words of appreciation of the dead soldier, upon which six of his comrades of A. W. Drips post, G. A. R. lowered his body to the grave in the adjacent cemetery.
