James “Bear” Peter David Klaaren was born July 25, 1954, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of James Lee and Florence Alice (Lowry) Klaaren. He graduated from Eddyville High School. Bear grew up in Eddyville and then moved to Cedar Rapids. He worked at Whirlpool in Amana. Bear’s greatest enjoyment in life was his dog, Ammo. He also enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles. Bear died on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids at the age of 71 years.

He is survived by his dog, Ammo; his brother, Steve (Kathy) Klaaren of Ladora; sister, Ellen (Morris) Wubbels and brother, Larry (Teresa) Miller all of New Sharon and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his dog Biscuit, step-dad Bob Miller, and sister Raygena Garringer.
