Died in France.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hintz received a telegram this week announcing the death in France of their son, Otto Julius Brummond, who died of pneumonia on October 19th. The young man left for overseas service last August. He was an industrious young farmer and his heroic sacrifice places him in the list of American heroes whose devotion will long be remembered by our people who cherish the memory of our gallant defenders. The family has the sympathy of the community.

OBITUARY
BRUMMOND
Otto Brummond, son of Albert F. Brummond, deceased, and Auguste Bussf, deceased, was born near New Hampton, Iowa, Mar. 20, 1894. When Otto was ten months old his father died, and his mother made her home with her parents in Bremer county. Upon her second marriage, when she became the wife of Mr. Andrew Hinz, she came to Howard county, where in the vicinity of Elma Otto was reared and grew to manhood. On April 4, 1915, his mother also passed away, but as an obedient son Otto stayed with his step-father two and one-half years more, seeing that he was needed there. A year ago, in the fall of 1917, he rented a farm near Maple Leaf and immediately made all necessary preparations for the next crop, his sister Emma keeping house for him.
Having put in his crop Otto was called to the colors May 26th and inducted into military service at Camp Dodge, where, as also later in France, he served in the 352nd Inf. Regt. In the fore part of August he was transported to France. He stood the voyage well as also the various exertions of military life. Even in his last letter dated Oct. 8th, he states that he was feeling O. K. But eleven days later, Oct. 19th, he passed from terrestrial war to celestial space. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia.
Deceased atttained{sic} the age of 24 years and 7 months. There remain to mourn, his step-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hinz, one brother, Albert Brummond of Camp Cody, N. M., four half-brothers, four half-sisters and two step-sisters. His relatives received the sad news of Otto’s demise Nov. 17th. On Nov. 28th memorial services were conducted at the Maple Leaf Lutheran church. The memory of this quiet, consistent, kind and industrious Christian will be cherished by many. Thus he will be a blessing on earth while his soul is enjoying the bliss of heaven.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1893 which does not agree with the above. He is buried in the Howard Cemetery.
