Passing Of a Pioneer.
John Wacha was born in Bohemia in the year of 1849. At the age of seventeen years he emigrated to America and spent some time in Chicago.
About fifty years ago, he came to Howard County which was then a wilderness, and with the hardiness of a true pioneer he set to work to clear a piece of land. With no means except his hands and a firm trust in God, he toiled for many years and finally succeeded and made for himself a comfortable home.
In 1876, he was united in marriage to Antonia Rosol who shared with him the hardships of his pioneer life.
To this couple were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. There remain to mourn, his faithful wife, his children, Joseph, John, Frank, and Mrs. Anton Chihak, besides twelve grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Jos. Haskovec, all of Howard County. From childhood, he was a devoted member of the Catholic faith, and died in the full consolation of its last sacred rites.
About two weeks before his death, he was taken with a serious illness, and all that medical skill and loving hands could do was of no avail. He bore his cross patiently to the end and on Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1918, he departed this life.
John Wacha was an upright and honest man, a loving husband and a kind and generous father. He was ever ready and willing to lend a charitable hand to those whose needs was greater than his.
The funeral was held on Oct. 31, 1918, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The services were conducted by Rev. P. Hogan who in a few well chosen words paid a fitting tribute to the deceased. Interment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery.
