John Thomas Moen, age 74, of Cresco passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Cresco, Iowa on May 16, 1949 to Oscar Lyle and Betty (Byrnes) Moen. John graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1967 where he lettered in three sports: basketball, baseball and cross-country. He was sports editor of the school newspaper and received the Quill and Scroll Award for High School Journalism.

After high school John attended Northern Iowa Area Community College where he worked his way through school coaching at the YMCA for 5th and 6th grade football and basketball.

John married Kristin Qualle on October 9, 1982, and they shared many wonderful years together before Kris’ death in April 2020. They had two sons together, Michael and Eric.

John was employed as a cement mason for many years and after retirement he was always willing to help family and friends with any concrete work. He was a perfectionist at this job.

John’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, cross-country and alpine skiing, tennis and pickleball. He was an avid downhill skier, skiing the rocky mountain ranges from Taos, New Mexico to Banff, British Columbia.

John is survived by his sons, Michael (Chealsey) of Colwell, Iowa and Eric of Cresco; siblings: Terri Offerman of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Peggy (Randy) Hovey of Cresco, Jim (Pam Kuennen) of Zumbrota, Minnesota and Jeff (Gina) of Grimes, Iowa; sister in-law Paula (Ron) Lapic of Rochester, Minnesota and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kris, his parents and his father and mother-in-law Orville and Imogene Qualle and his beloved yellow Lab, Samie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Howard County Community Hospice or HOCA (Howard County Cancer Association).

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides of Howard County Community Hospice for the loving and compassionate care that John received.

Private family services will be held.
