John P Smith

Mr. John P Smith, who has been an invalid for the past six years, passed away Dec. 14th, 1898, very suddenly. John P Smith was born in Perquinous County, North Carolina, April 11th 1818. He was united in marriage with Julia E Kenyon, Feb 8, 1838.
Their union was blessed with six children, two of who are still living. William L., who resides at home, and cared for his father so faithfully during his illness, and James M., of Fort Madison, Iowa.
Mrs Smith having died in 1863, he was afterwards married to Lizzie J Boothe (note: Elizabeth Jane Booth). Five children were born to them. Four of these with his faithful wife survive him. Bertram Smith, Mrs. L.F. Conner, Harry Smith, and Mrs Fiedler reside in this city, Rose having departed this life Aug 12, 1886. Mr. Smith moved with his family to Clarinda in 1843, and came to Jackson Township, Henry County, Iowa in 1849. He united with the M.E. church about this time and was an active member, being one of the leading members in revival meetings, leading the singing and teaching singing school during the winter months. He always took a great interest in Sunday school work, acting as superintendent many times. He was greatly interested in education. He gave three sons to his country during the Civil War, Thomas J., who was killed at Sterling Far, William S. and James G.M. As a conversationalist, Mr. Smith was very entertaining and instructive. He was able to discuss the topics of the day, in which he kept well informed; also theological subjects, so that the beginner in the christian live might gain strength and derive much benefit by conversing with him.
His funeral was conducted by Rev Roberts, who selected for his text. "Set thy home in order". He was interred in Forest Home cemetery to await the future day.
