PARKERSBURG-Diederich "Dick" Herman Hempen, 60, of Parkersburg, died of natural causes Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield, Minn. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 30 at First Congregational Church in Parkersburg. Rev. Ron Bartlett and Rev. Steve Petroelje officiated. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg.
Dick was born Sept. 15, 1941, in Waterloo, to Harold and Leona (Ludemann) Hempen. He graduated from Aplington High School in 1959. On Sept. 29, 1961, he married Judith Asche in Parkersburg. They made their home in Parkersburg while Dick worked at Clay Equipment in Waterloo. The moved to Hampton and later Eldora, where he was custodian at the hospital. They also owned and operated Hempen Shoes and Repair in Parkersburg, and Dick worked for the City of Parkersburg. He later was employed at the UNI Power Plant in Cedar Falls as a boiler operator. He enjoyed training to become an auctioneer. Dick played in several dance bands and enjoyed summers in Minnesota and winters in Canada fishing with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Parkersburg; a son, Kurt and his wife, Jill, of Parkersburg; a daughter, Kristy Lammers and her husband, Mike, of Allison; four grandchildren, Haleigh and Keaton Hempen, and Reid and Rhett Lammers; a brother, Gaylan Hempen and his wife, Carol of Clarksville; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Hempen, of Aplington. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Ronald.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg, was in charge of arrangements.
