Thursday, April 6, 1876, Dubuque Daily Times (Dubuque, Iowa) Page: 3

An old gentleman named White, of Hardin County, near Xenia, while excavating in a stone quarry, struck a cave, into which he went on an exploring exhibition; in five minutes he came out a great deal faster then he went in, for he found the cave to be a snakes’ den. As soon as he could recover his self-possession and a club he returned to the cave and killed sixty. The other seven hundred crawled away into the crevices-rattle-snakes, bull-snakes, black-snakes, blue-racers, and scores of other kinds.
