Funeral services for Gertrude M. Hammon, 97, of Garner who died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997, at the Concord Care Center, Garner, were held 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 28, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner with the Rev. Dan Bloesch officiating.

Music was provided by organist, Audrey Sonnenberg, who accompanied soloist, Warren Torkelson, and congregational hymns. Usher was Norman Henschen.

Casket bearers were Wayne Hammon Jr., Steve Hammon, Terry Hammon, Mark Hammon, David Hammon, Carl Hammon, Dennis Hammon, Lorin Hammon, Milo Blakewell, Marlin Blakewell, Milton Blakewell, Michael Blakewell, Ronald Novak and Gary Novak.

Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner. Visitation was held Saturday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Gertrude Mable Hammon, the daughter of August and Marie (Bredlow) Nuehring, was born December 7, 1899, in German Township, Garner. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township graduating form the eighth grade. Gertrude worked for neighbors until her marriage to Sam Hammon on December 20, 1918, at her parent's home in Liberty Township. The couple met in 1917 when Gertrude went to work at Sam's parent's home as a hired girl. She used to say with a laugh, "That's why we got along, I learned his mother's way of cooking and doing things." They farmed south of Garner until 1950, when they moved to their home on Rose Avenue, Garner. She continued living there after Sam died on November 6, 1988. She entered the Concord Care Center in 1989.

She worked in the kitchens of the Garner Sale Barn and the Garner Community Schools for many years. She also cared for many Garner residents including her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, Erastus, her mother and husband as well as many other elderly friends and neighbors.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Garner. She enjoyed crocheting, tatting and making doilies that she shared with many of her relatives. She also enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, which was evident all around her home.

She is survived by her children, Wayne Hammon and his wife, Olive of LeRoy, MN, Lynn Hammon of Spring Valley, MN, Lois Blakewell and her husband, Clair of Clear Lake, and Doris Novak of Fertile, 22 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Owen, Leslie, and Arno "Shorty" Nuehring; a daughter-in-law, Nellie Hammon; a son-in-law, Henry Novak; two grandsons, Paul and Bobby Hammon; and two great grandchildren.
