1920-1998Services for Boyd H. Denney, 77, of Garner, who died Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, at the United Presbyterian Church with Pastor Daniel Bloesch officiating.
Music was provided by organist, Karen Pedersen who accompanied soloist, Beverly Cataldo and a Congregational hymn. Usher was Norman Henschen.
Honorary casket bearers were David Bye, Raymond Bye, James Bye, Eldo Ouerbo, Bob Ouerbo, Jason Gardner, Mark Putz, Michael Putz, Martin Putz, Robert Denney and Tom Denney.
Active bearers were E.D. "Red" Buntenbach, Lance Gardener, Doug Hayes, Paul Ristau, Bob Sniezek and Dick Voortman.
Burial was in Concord Township Cemetery, Gamer. Visitation was held Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.
Boyd Henry Denney, the son of James and Florence (Ferguson) Denny, was born August 16, 1920. at Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1938 and attended college at Upper Iowa University at Fayette where he played football.
July 22, 1942 he married Hazel Adeline Stuart at Ellis Point Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. They made their home in Lebanon, IN, where he worked at a defense plant for several years. In 1945, they moved to Rake where they farmed. In 1958, they moved to Garner where they owned and operated the Westside Grocery Store. In 1983, they remodeled the store and changed it to Denny's Townhouse Deli. Hazel and Boyd continued to work at the Deli together until they retired.
Boyd also drove school bus for the Garner-Hayfield Community Schools for approximately 17 years. He enjoyed his family, work, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Garner.
He survived by his son, Roger Denney and his wife, Sheryll of Garner: a grandson, Brian Denney of Garner: two step-grandsons, Lance Gardner and his wife, Buffy of Garner, and Jason Gardner of Garner: a sister, Elain Putz and her husband, Merlin of Neehah, WI: and brother, James Denney and his wife, Wilma of Hampton, VA; and a sister-in-law, Kay Denney of Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel, April 11; parents; and a brother, Robert Denney.
