The Rev. Robert P. Phillips, 101, of Britt died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt. He was born September 17, 1909, the 8th child of W.E. Phillips and Mary (Shroyer) Phillips of New Sharon, Iowa. He graduated from New Sharon High School with the class of 1927 and received his undergraduate degree from William Penn in Oskaloosa in 1939. On April 24th, 1932 he married Anna Mae Hess, daughter of Michael Hess and Jennie (Hull) Hess of Oskaloosa. To this union two children were born: Joan Elizabeth (Jerry) Nielsen of Britt, IA. and Robert Dean (Carol) of Ames, IA.

In fall of 1939, Robert entered Garrett Biblical Institute and Theological Seminary and served United Methodist Churches at Sheridan and Sandwich in Illinois. Following graduation in June of 1943, Robert and Anna served churches at LuVerne/Livermore, Laurens, Vinton, Montgomery, and as an Associate at Spirit Lake, officially retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Masons. He enjoyed lending a hand on the farm, fishing and bowling. He also enjoyed watching all sports, especially when his grandchildren were participating.

In retirement, he enjoyed working on cabins on the Methodist campground at Spirit Lake with the "PTL" group. His legacy in enhancing the camping program of the Methodist Church on West Okoboji continued through his ministerial service. He will be greatly missed by all of his extended family and many friends.

He is survived by his two children and spouses, 5 grandchildren: Jerry Robert (Vicki) Nielsen, Jody Ann (Tom) Larson, Jeffery Alan (Rebecca) Nielsen, Robert Allen (Maureen) Phillips, and Theresa (Mike) Malak, and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret "Peggy" Gordon of Plymouth, MN and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae, in 2010, his parents, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Funeral services for Reverend Robert Phillips will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the family present to greet friends and relatives until service time at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Bob and Anna Phillips Park fund (in Monarch Cove on Lake Okoboji) or to William Penn University.
