Maxine L. Jans, 76, Ellsworth, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of leukemia. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the United Methodist Church of Ellsworth with Rev. Dana Williams to officiate. Burial will follow at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Becker Funeral home in Jewell. Memorials may be given to the Ellsworth United Methodist Church.

Maxine LaVonne Coulter was born northeast of Stratford on April 9, 1925 to James R. and Hannah Peterson Coulter. She grew up in the Stratford area, graduating from Stratford High School in 1943. On Dec. 28, 1948 Maxine married Wallace Jans at the Methodist parsonage in Stratford. They farmed west of Kamrar for 6 years and north of Ellsworth since 1955. Maxine also worked at East Lane Manor in Jewell and Bethany Manor in Story City. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ellsworth.

Maxine is survived by her husband, Wallace of Ellsworth, daughters and sons-in-law, Deanne Brill of Ames, Patricia and William Henderson of Story City, Sharon Jans of Ames, Mary and Michael Johnston of Oxford, Mich.; three grandchildren, Daniel and wife Michelle Henderson, Jason Henderson and Lucy Henderson; two great-grandchildren, Brett and Megan Henderson, a brother, Dean Coulter of Stratford; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, a sister, Audrey Coulter and a brother, Robert Coulter, preceded her in death.
