Saturday, December 19, 2006Dorothy B. Lewis was born on April 7, 1918 to John and Pearl (Hayes) McCool in Guthrie County, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Dorothy grew up on a farm in Guthrie County and graduated from Guthrie Center High School In 1938. On November 5, 1938 she was united in marriage to Howard Lewis in Princeton, Missouri. She taught school in country schools and she later received her degree in education. She also taught special education in Casey schools until her health would not allow her to continue. In 1989, they moved to Jefferson, where she lived until the spring of 2006. She then moved to Yale and made her home there until her death.
Dorothy is survived by a son, Jerry Lewis and his wife, Denna of Guthrie Center; grandchildren, Jon, Jason, Jennifer, two great-grandchildren and a sister, Geraldine Rutherford of Grimes. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Howard, sisters, Eva Belle McCool, Norma Jean Sumner, Gladys Winders and Mildred Reeves.
A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with Bruce Webster officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Beidelman - Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center. Burial of her ashes will be held at a later date at Monteith Cemetery, rural Guthrie Center.
