EHLERS, JOCKIMS, SMELTZER

Carl Henry Ehlers was born in Holstein, Germany on Feb 24, 1835, and departed this life on Dec. 24, 1919 at the home of his daughter in Grand Junction, at the age of 84 years, 10 months, 10 days.

He came to America with his parents in June 1853. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Matildia Jockins at Lyons, Iowa, and moved to Tama county in 1870 where he resided until 1877 when he and his family moved to Greene County. To this union were born six children, two of whom survive him, Mrs. Kate Smeltzer of Grand Junction and John F. Ehlers of Council Bluffs, Iowa. His wife preceded him in death September 29, 1885.

In October Mr. Ehlers suffered a slight stroke of apoplexy from which he rallied, but was not in robust health after that. The third stroke occurred on Wednesday night which ended his earthly suffering.

Mr. Ehlers was a faithful member of the Lutheran church, having been baptized in that faith. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him best, having made many friends in Grand Junction. In addition to the immediate relatives he leaves two grandchildren and two great grandchildren to mourn his death.

Funeral services was held in Friends church Saturday morning at 11 o'clock conducted by the Pastor Grace M. Elliott. Interment in Dawson cemetery.
