Clarence Murphy, age 77, of Churdan passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Zapata County Medical Center in Zapata, Texas. Born on July 23, 1931 at Jefferson, Iowa, he was the son of Otto J. "Tobe" and Leota E. (Wright) Murphy. He grew up in the Scranton area and graduated from Scranton High School in 1950.

He was married to Beverly Christensen on December 26, 1953 at First Lutheran Church in Scranton. In their early years the couple farmed near Scranton and moved to Minnesota from 1968 – 1986 where they also farmed. Clarence was employed by Electrolux in Jefferson for 10 years and in his retirement he enjoyed fixing up and renting houses.

He had also sang in a gospel quartet. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Jefferson. In his spare time Clarence enjoyed gardening, fishing, going to family reunions, traveling, and helping others.

The Murphy's celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on December 26, 2009 in Texas.

Surviving are his wife Beverly of Churdan, Iowa; a daughter Paula Murphy of Churdan, Iowa; a daughter Joyce Davis and her husband Bob of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; a son Mick Murphy and his wife Karen of Dennison, Minnesota; a son Mark Murphy and his wife Michelle of Northfield, Minnesota; a son Marty Murphy and his wife Lisa of Churdan, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a sister Faye Wood of Bagley, Iowa; a sister Pat Smith of Bagley, Iowa; a sister Iris Kelley and her husband Russ of Scranton, Iowa; a sister Beverly Appling and her husband Paul of Springfield, Oregon; a brother Larry Murphy and his wife Beverly of Jefferson, Iowa; a sister Bonnie Fogerty of Grand Junction, Iowa; a brother Jim Murphy of Ankney, Iowa; a brother-in-law Donald Thorp of Jefferson, Iowa; a sister-in-law Barbara Murphy of Jefferson; a sister-in-law Jeanene Baker of Jefferson, Iowa; a brother-in-law Darwin Christensen of Snellville, Georgia; a brother-in-law LaVerne Christensen of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a brother-in-law Allen Christensen of Arvada, Colorado.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Vida Thorpe, two brothers: Dennis Murphy and Robert Murphy a granddaughter Bridget Murphy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church in Jefferson with Pastor Amy Fondroy Eich officiating. Organist for the service will be Sharon Stalder and soloist will be granddaughter Siobhan Meehl. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.

The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Casket bearers will be grandchildren: Mark Murphy Jr., Jeff Davis, Mat Murphy, Blake Murphy, Robin Ring, and Crystal Beyers.

Honorary casket bearers will be Mike Murphy (serving in Iraq), Siobhan Meehl, Mary Murphy, Sarah Murphy, Jeremy Rossow, Angel Hicks, Herman Richards, Marvin Taylor, and Bill Hanks. The Des Moines (IA) Register Tues 13 Jan 2009.
