SERVICES HERE FOR ERVIN BIRD WOOD

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 31 at Slininger chapel for Ervin Bird Wood, 89, with the Rev. Gerald B. Noland, pastor of the Methodist church in Boone officiating. Interment was in the Rippey cemetery.

Casket bearers were Walter Babb, Howard Slininger, Clair Thornburg, Harvey Morse, Linn Royer and W. F. Coon. Mrs. Verle Johnson sang “Goodnight and Goodmorning” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Accompanied by Miss Katherine Ann Ferguson.

Ervin Bird Wood, son of Wm. Orville and Jane Bay Wood, was born June 8, 1861, at Strawberry Point, Clayton county, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Jefferson, Iowa, June 22, 1950, at the age of 89 years and 14 days.

At the age of five years, he with his parents moved to Crawford county, Iowa, in a covered wagon. He attended school in Crawford county where he later began farming.

On December 4, 1895, he was united in marriage to Leah Olive Peacock. To this union eight children, four boys and four girls, were born.

In 1900 they came to Greene county, where they continued farming. In 1942 they retired and moved to Jefferson where they have since lived.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, 2 sisters and 1 brother.

Those surviving are his wife, four daughters, Alta, Mrs. Geo. Mantz of Jefferson; Vera, Mrs Harry Johnson, of Jefferson; Mrs. Payne Adkins of Gowrie; Vava, Mrs. J. W. Monthel of Rippey; and four sons Floyd E. of Independence; Walter of Grand Junction, Harley of Lake City and Lyle of Japan; 20 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Effie Sams, Hudson, Colo.; Mrs. Nellie Smith, Creighton, Nebr.; Mrs. Florence Rudd, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Anna Sage, La Crosse, Wis.; besides other relatives and friends.
