Death Angel Sounds "Taps" for R. W. Barnes, Citizen of County for Nearly Seventy Years.

One by one the defenders of the Union cause in those trying days of Civil War are going to sleep in "that low green tent whose curtain never outward swings."

The latest of these in this community is Richard Watson Barnes who departed this life Saturday night, August 8, at his home s/north of Sidney at the goodly age of 79 years, 8 month and 26 days.

The deceased was a native Iowan, born in Poweshiek county November 12, 1845. When a small boy he came with his parents, Harrison and Mary Barnes, to Fremont County and ever since had called Sidney his home. Then only 18 years of age Mr. Barnes heard the call of his country and marched away as a member of the 8th Iowa Cavalry. Well toward he close of conflict he returned to Sidney bearing wounds received in ___on, which injury was later aggravated in a runaway accident and rendered him lame for life. To this combination of war wounds and accidental injuries his death was directly ____.

For the past several years he has been a constant but patient sufferer and the past four months has Barnes confined to his bed.

November 14, 1870, Mr. Barnes was united in marriage with Eliza Jane Barrett and to their union four sons and two daughters were born, all of whom survive: Charles, Louis, Edward, and Herbert Barnes, all of this community, Mrs. Mary Etta Story of Riverton and Mrs. Emma Keyser of Nebraska City. There are nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. The death of Mr. Barnes at nearly 80 is the first in his immediate family.

Positive in his convictions, and yet tolerant of the views of others, Mr. Barnes led a life of integrity and up___ tness that commanded the esteem of all. From civil war days to a recent period no neighborhood gathering was considered complete without "Uncle Dick" with fiddle and cheery good humor. His musing leaves deep sorrow in the ___rts of a wide circle.

Funeral services were held at the ___at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Christy of Hamburg, and interment was in Sidney Cemetery.
