The Fremont County Herald, published in Sidney, Iowa
Thursday, September 2nd, 1920The ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic were again thinned in our community when Lewis Love who had lived here in Sidney for years, responded to the roll call at the Grand Headquarters on High last Monday evening, August 30, at about 8 o'clock.
Lewis Love was born in Athens County, Ohio, January 5, 1847, where he grew to young manhood. He was married to Maria Snoden of Athens, Ohio, March 18, 1866. To this union three daughters were born, all of whom were at his bedside when he passed away. He came to Fremont County, Iowa, in 1882 where he resided for about 17 years on a farm before coming to Sidney in 1899, where he has resided ever since.
When a mere boy he became a member of Company A, 18th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, and as such he served his country faithfully for three years when its future was in peril and the war clouds hung low over the land.
He was a member of the G. A. R. Post here in Sidney until the same was discontinue for a lack of membership. He was always an attendant of the Old Soldiers' Reunion here in Sidney until this year, when sickness detained him and slowly undermined his strength till he passed away.
Besides his wife with whom he has walked along life's highway for a little over 54 years, he leaves three daughters and their families to mourn his death. His daughters are Mrs. Clara DeFreece and Mrs. Bertha DeFeece of Sidney and Mrs. Elsie Liggett of Scott City, Kansas. By his death the community has lost a good citizen; every old soldier a friend; his family a loving husband and father.
The funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Raoul R. Moser of the Methodist Church having charge of the same. His mortal remains were laid to rest in the Sidney Cemetery. Sympathy and kindly condolence is hereby extended to the bereaved family.
