Using as his text 2 Timothy 4:7, "I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith," Rev. Frank Mills who conducted last rites for Commodore Perry Lomax Saturday afternoon at Bethany Christian Church declared "no truer words could have been uttered for our Comrade Lomax." Mr. Lomax, well known Lincoln Civil War veteran, died here Wednesday evening.
Farragut Post of the G. A. R. was in charge of the funeral, with Rev. Mr. Mills, chaplain of the group, directly in charge. A reserved section was occupied by twenty-five members of the G. A. R. Relief Corps and member of Farragut post. Following Rev. Mr. Mills' address, E. P. Brown, commander of the post, conducted the G. A. R. service and at the close of the service taps were sounded, "Boys of 61" and "Passing On" are sung by a quartet made up of two members of the Relief Corps and two from Farragut post. The casket was draped with the flag.
The body will be taken to Farragut, Iowa, Sunday for further services and burial Monday. In his eulogy, Rev. Mr. Mills said in part: "No one can build a great life without making a fight. Mr. Lomax was a great lover of his country and in the sixty's offered his life on the nation's alter that this nation might be preserved. He left home and friends and sacrificed everything to help in the nation's fight and he continued in service until the war was finished. The mason and Dixie line was lifted and the black man set free. He kept his country's faith.
Comrade Lomax lived a valuable life here in our city. He had much to do with the wouth. He always had a welcome hand and was ready to help the young men and women into a higher and nobler life. In his church he was unsurpassed. He contributed liberally of his means and gave of his time and influence without money or without price.
"Our comrade has woven into these ninety odd years of his life threads of gold, stayed and sure. His memory will live. Spiritually he has finished his course and has gone for his reward."
