Friday, January 27th, 1911Charles H. Knapp was born near Burlington, Iowa, in Des Monies County, October 27, 1842, and died at his residence in Sidney, Iowa, January 23, 1911, aged 68 years, 3 months and 26 days.
November 7, 1870 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Nancy Combs at Kirksville, Missouri, and to this union were born four daughters, two of whom died in infancy; the other two are now Mrs. Nellie Cushman and Mrs. Dana Garvin. He leaves to mourn him a wife, one sister and two daughters. At the age of 4 years Mr. Knapp lost both his parents and he then made his home with his brother until he was 13 years old when he emigrated to Adair County, Missouri, where he grew to manhood.
At the age of 20 he enlisted under General Steel and was a member of Company I, 7th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He was engaged in all the principal battles fought in Arkansas and southern Missouri.
Mr. Knapp was a constant sufferer for many years and bore it all with patience and fortitude. He was a kind father and loving husband and an accommodating neighbor. By a strict integrity and constant attention to his business affairs he had accumulated quite an amount of this world's goods, and leaves his family well provided for.
The funeral services were from the Methodist Church Wednesday at 2 o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Frank Caldwell, assisted by Rev. Anthony Jacobs, pastor of the Baptist Church. The large church was filled with the neighbors and friends, showing the esteem in which Mr. Knapp was held in the community. He was a member of the local G. A. R. post and 20 of his comrades in arms were present in a body and headed the procession to the cemetery.
Mr. Knapp will be greatly missed by these men who at their country's call went into the southland to uphold the authority of the government.
