Mary Avis Walsh, age 92, formerly of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Anastasia Walsh in Windsor Heights, where she had been cared for the last two and one-half years.

Mary Avis Lawrie was born into this life, on February 6, 1915 in Charles City, the daughter of William Henry “Harry” and Rose Isabella (Leary) Lawrie. “Avis” was raised in Nashua, where she graduated from Nashua High School. She married the late Clark F. Walsh on May 8, 1935 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua. In 1951, the family moved to Charles City where Mr. Walsh had founded the Walsh Manufacturing Company.

Avis was an active parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for 55 years and her husband, Clark, was chairman of the building committee responsible for relocating and erecting the present church following the destruction of the old church by the tornado in 1968.

Also, Avis was a long-time member and officer of St. Michael’s Circle. She became a professed member of the Third Order of Mt. Carmel in 1964. Avis’ love of Christ and of her family was the fabric of her life. She was known as a person who led by her Christian example.

She was a selfless, non judgmental woman who had a genuine attitude of gratitude, humility, generosity, trust and acceptance. Avis’ gentle spirit will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Living family members include her 10 children, Michael (Anastasia) Walsh of Windsor Heights, Joan (Donovan) Ochs of Solon, Iowa, Mary Ann Culbert of Rochester, Illinois, William (Cathy) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Kathleen (Jerry) Bill of Charles City, Margaret Walsh of Urbandale, Iowa, Rosemary (Don) Hildebrand of Athens, Georgia, Patrick (Nancy) Walsh of Orono, Minn., Dennis (Sara) Walsh of Charles City, and David Walsh of Bogart, Georgiaa; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a cousin, Tom (Barbara) Leary of Charles City; and nieces and nephews, Patti Brumley (Tony Cilluffo, Michael (Linda) Brumley and James Brumley all of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband who died in 1976; a sister, Margaret Lawrie Brumley of Ontario, California; and an infant brother, James Lawrie.
