I did a search for him in West Union newspapers, but had no luck finding an obituary for him there, though I found a brief death notice for his wife at [ https://westunion.advantage-preservation.com/viewer/?i=f&by=1899&bdd=1890&d=01011899-12311899&e=campbell&m=between&ord=e1&fn=west_union_gazette_usa_iowa_west_union_18990616_english_5&df=41&dt=50 ].

The good news is that 5 public libraries in Fayette County have digitized their newspapers spanning 1856-2020 and offer them free of charge online. You might also try contacting the Fayette County Historical Center https://www.fayettecountyhistoricalcenter.org/genealogy to ask if they might have a copy of his obituary on file.
