J.W. Oakes was born in LaPorte, Indiana, March 22, 1867, and died December 15 at 8 o'clock. He lived in Oregon, Ill., until he came to Iowa thirty-eight years ago. March 6, 1892, he was married to Miss Eda Kent of Rolfe, Iowa, by the Mayor of Pocahontas. He has lived on the same farm in Jack Creek Township for thirty-eight years. Three children have preceded him in death, the two living are Joe Jr., at home and Mrs. O.J. Davin of Fort Dodge. He took great pride and pleasure in his only grandchild, Doris Maxine Davin.

Mr. Oakes was a member of M.W.A. lodge; director of Farmers Savings Bank, Ringsted; secretary of Jack Creek school board for twenty years and was township trustee at the time of his death. He was an ardent supporter of the Hoprig church and all religious and community activities.

Funeral was held Wednesday at two o'clock at the home conducted by Rev. Gladstone of the Presbyterian church. Music by the Ringsted male quartet. Burial was in High Lake cemetery.
