Paul V. Vorwald

PLACID, Iowa - Paul V. Vorwald, 83, of 20888 East Pleasant Grove Road, Epworth, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at 4:24 p.m. at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital in Dubuque.

Friends and relatives of Paul may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Holy Family Church New Melleray-Peosta. Services for Paul will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in New Melleray, Peosta, with the Rev. Aloysius Vorwald presiding and the Rev. Michael J. Podhajsky concelebrating. Burial will be held in St. John's Cemetery in Placid.

Paul was born Dec. 28, 1930, in New Vienna, son of Ray and Amelia Vorwald. He received his education in the rural country and Xavier schools. On Aug. 11, 1954, he was united in marriage to Ethel Recker at St. Boniface in New Vienna. The couple farmed in the rural Epworth (Placid) area for 59 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Peosta.

Paul enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play ball and tractor pulling. Paul was a great story teller and always loved to share a good joke.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Vorwald, of Placid; four sons, James (Lynn) Vorwald, of Scotch Grove, David Vorwald, of Zwingle, Pat (Jill) Vorwald, of Bernard, and Daniel (Judith) Vorwald, of Bernard; three daughters, Janie Vorwald, of Placid, Marjorie (Philip) Lehmann, of Peosta, and Diane Vorwald (friend, Tommy L. Paul V. Vorwaldangas), of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald, of Dyersville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas Strang, of Cedar Rapids, Darlene Vorwald, of Dyersville, Cyril Recker, of New Vienna, Gladys Wessels, of Dyersville, Doris (Wayne) Wright, of Montgomery, Ill., Norma (Ken) Eike, of Manchester, Shirley (Butch) Feldmann, of Dyersville, Roger (Linda) Recker, of Ryan, Dennis (JoAnne) Recker, of Dyersville, Larry (Alice) Recker of Tucson, Ariz., and Joyce (Leo) Davidshofer, of Dubuque.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Stephen Paul Vorwald, on June 28, 1978, and Michael Francis Vorwald, on Aug. 9, 1990; a brother, Wilfred Vorwald; and a sister Rosemary Strang; five brothers-in-law, Ernie Wessels, Jim Recker, Melvin Recker, Marvin Recker and Earl Recker.
