Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA) - Friday, October 23, 2015
Stacy A. McDermott

Just as in one of her favorite songs, Stacy A. McDermott, 62, of Dubuque, left her journey here with us to a place of peace "somewhere over the rainbow," Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, October 25th, at Christ the King Chapel, Loras College. The family will welcome friends at 2:00 p.m. with a Mass at 3:00 p.m.

Stacy was born in Cedar Rapids, IA, spent her early years in St. Paul, Minnesota, and moved to Dubuque at the age of 10. She attended Wahlert High School where she met John McDermott; they married in 1974.

Upon graduation from Mercy School of Radiology, she attended Loras College and the University of Dubuque. Stacy worked at Mercy Hospital, Independent Diagnostic Radiology and Finley Hospital in Radiology and Administrative positions. Her love for helping people and advancing medical care in Dubuque was always the heart of her work.

Stacy enjoyed gardening, having fun with good friends, and her faithful dogs. Upon retirement, she enjoyed spending time in Minnesota and Texas with her grandsons.

In recent years, she dealt with numerous health challenges, including surviving breast cancer. The road was a long one and always seemed uphill, but Stacy tackled it with humor and the determined spirit that we all knew and loved her for.

Stacy is survived by: her husband, John; children, Maggie McDermott (Andy Groth), of Winona, MN, and Casey McDermott (Aamie Fish) of Southlake TX; grandsons, Kellen Groth and William McDermott. Stacy is also survived by her sister Sally Spahn; and in-laws, Jan (Jon) Lukens, Jean (Bill) Steadman, Jim (Jan) McDermott. Stacy's family was not defined by genetics, and she leaves Kim Bergfeld and the Payne family, John and Carolyn Haupert, and many others who were so dear to her.

Stacy enters into heaven to meet her parents, Norman and Mildred Spahn & Howard and Ag McDermott; her sister Susan; along with many friends and family who await her arrival.

Stacy had a unique relationship with so many talented physicians and medical staff members through her years in hospital administration. These same compassionate individuals made the last several years of Stacy's life possible. The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Mercy Health Center, Stonehill Care Center, Drs. John Whalen, Chris Stille, Honori Caceres, Ben Rolling and their staff, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Her wish was that each of you that were touched by her life and love do one act of kindness in her memory. She loved all of you to the moon and back.

In lieu of flowers, memorial cards can be sent to Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, Dubuque, IA 52003.
