PEOSTA, Iowa - Mary LaVon Brown, 82, of 18803 E. Pleasant Grove Road, Peosta, died at 12:37 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, rural Peosta, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 6 p.m.

She was born on Feb. 10, 1924, in Bankston, daughter of Irvin and Anna (Kiernan) Potts. She married Mark S. Brown on May 27, 1947, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

She was a 1938 graduate of the former St. Clement's High School, Bankston.

Prior to a lifelong career devoted to raising her family, she was a teacher in the rural country schools in Dubuque County.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish in rural Peosta, and a member of its Rosary Society.

Mary LaVon loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are five sons, Richard (Kathy) Brown, of Macomb, Ill., Robert Brown, of Peosta, Mark (Mary) Brown, of St. Joseph, Mich., and Bill (Diane) Brown and Jim Brown, both of Peosta; four daughters, Mary Lou (Earl) Brohard, of Cedar Hills, Utah, Jean Ann (Todd) Straub, of Cedar Rapids, Rebecca (Dan) Gundacker, of Beaver Dam, Wis., and Jennifer Brown, of Des Moines; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy (Emmett) McDermott, of Bernard; and three brothers, Jerry (Kay) Potts, Cyril (Virginia) Potts and Gene (Janann) Potts, all of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark S. Brown, on Aug. 21, 1981; a son, John Brown; and a brother, Warren "Buddy" Potts.

Memorials may be given to the Epworth Volunteer Ambulance Service.

The family would like to thank Dr. Manzel, Dr. Schreiber, and Dr. Johnson along with the Mercy Medical Center third floor nursing staff for all the wonderful care and compassion shown to Mary LaVon.
