BERNARD, Iowa -- Staff Sergeant Gregory W. McDermott, 32, of Hebron, Ky., formerly of Bernard, died at 8:19 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, in Ohio from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 25, at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid, where military rites will be accorded by the United States Marine Corp, GSM Co. 4th Maint. Battalion. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 24, at Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

He was born on Nov. 22, 1975, in Dubuque, son of Leo and Suzanne (Graham) McDermott. He was a 1994 graduate of Western Dubuque High School, Epworth.

Greg actively served in the Marines for 14 years, including two tours of duty in Iraq.

He married Heather Tolf on July 1, 2000, at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid.

Greg enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening with his daughter, playing cards, fishing and carpentry.

Surviving are his wife, Heather McDermott, of Hebron; a daughter, Rory McDermott, at home; his parents, Leo and Suzanne McDermott, of Bernard; a brother, Jeff (Lori) McDermott; four sisters, Sheryl (Sean) Knockemus, of Olathe, Kan., Lisa (Troy) Miller, of Kansas City, Mo., Colleen (Benny Tali) McDermott, of Kansas City, and Jennifer (Justin) White, of Sydney, Australia; and many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Glen McDermott; and his grandparents.
